In 1891 the New Orleans Fire Department went from volunteers to a paid system. They worked 24 hrs a day with 3 hrs off for meals.  Horses were retired from service in 1922.  Engine #8 was organized 15 Dec. 1891 at 20 Decatur St.  On Jan 6, 1896 it was moved to 1421 St. Roch Ave.  A hurricane in Sept 1915 destroyed the quarters and was disbanded but reorganized in 1916.  Tom joined the department in 1920 and served most of his 27 years at Engine #8 until his retirement in 1949. In 1965 it was disbanded for the last time.  Many memories lie in that building in addition to stories and jokes told on the bench in front of the fire station.  Neighbors sat on the steps at night visiting with family and friends, windows open, radio playing and children playing on the banquette.  After retiring Tom went to work for Jacob Schoen Insurance Co. as an agent and later supervisor and worked there for 15 years.  Like a typical Irishman with the gift of gab, Tom missed being around people and went to work for his nephew Billy Fitzpatrick at F & F Concessions at the City Park Golf Club House, retiring from there in 1975. He lived to be 91 and lead a very productive and fulfilling life.

Dec 31, 1990, WWL-TV, Editorial by Phil Johnson:  "we have lost a good man this year, Captain Thomas Fitzpatrick.  A strong, vigorous, vital man, a fireman for much of his life, a kind, sweet and gentle man for all of his life."
